Here Comes the Nighttime

As you can see, the darkness is upon us here in Uppsala. It's already mid-November, yet there has been not much snow and it hasn't gotten that cold yet. I've started to wear my winter jacket, but it can get a bit too warm, especially when it's actually light out.

The darkness is not really as depressing as everyone says. The Swedes really have figured out how to deal with winter, even though New-Englanders have almost the same amount of darkness (maybe an additional 3-4 hours of light) and definitely as much snow as mid and southern Sweden. Yet, Swedes really know how to make things mysig, or cozy. I will certainly be bringing this back with me. There are candles abound, and everyone is getting ready for Christmas, as the first advent falls on the 30th of November this year.

Swedes also typically eat dinner around 5pm, and everything shuts at 5-6pm in Uppsala (or earlier) besides the grocery stores. This is a great way to end up going to bed early, so that you get up at sunrise to make the most of such dark days.

Stay tuned for more darkness, some light, and hopefully some snow!
