Bikes are parked all along the river in Uppsala. Because of the bike culture, everyone owns a bike for local transportation. I was warned pretty soon into my time here that bike theft is also really common, and that people would steal bikes, and then throw them into the river. Or, drunk students would find unlocked bikes and toss them in for sport. Today, on my way to class, I caught a confirming glance of the myth!
